How to Practise Poker Against Bots (and Actually Improve)

A simple routine for practising No-Limit Hold'em against AI bots: pick one opponent style, play a focused block of hands, then review the ones you lost.

Playing thousands of hands against bots is easy. Getting better from them takes a bit of structure. The players who improve fastest treat a bot session like a training drill, not a way to pass the time.

Pick one opponent, not a random table

A table full of mixed bots is fun, but it teaches you very little: every hand is against someone different, so you never see a pattern. Choose one style you struggle with and fill the table with it.

  • Lose too much to aggression? Practise against Shark or Maniac.
  • Can’t get paid with your good hands? Play Sticky and learn to value-bet every street.
  • Feel lost against solid players? Grinder shows you where your own strategy leaks.

Set a goal for the block

Before you start, write down one thing you are working on: “call down more often against Shark’s turn barrels” or “raise every limp from Sticky with a wide range”. A block of 200 to 500 hands with a single goal beats 5,000 hands on autopilot.

Review the hands you lost

After the block, open the hand history and filter for pots you lost or folded on the river. For each one, ask:

  1. What range did the bot have when it made that bet?
  2. Was my hand ahead of enough of that range to continue?
  3. What would I do differently next time?

Because every bot has a published profile, you can check your read against what the bot actually does. That feedback loop is the main advantage of practising against bots instead of strangers.

Move up when you are winning

Start soft. Once you are clearly beating Rock and Sticky over a few thousand hands, move on to Regular, then Shark, then Grinder. Losing at a slower rate against a stronger bot is progress too.

Keep it to play money

Bots are a training tool. Use them at private and play-money tables, and leave real-money sites to real players: running a bot there breaks the site’s rules and cheats the people you are playing against.
